Q: Ilm-38: When a man instructed his wife to observe purdah from his elder brother, his mother became extremely upset and threatened to separate from them because of it. We wish to know whether the mother's rights have been infringed by upsetting her?
Answer: The Hadith defines a woman's brother-in-law as death, meaning that it is incumbent to observe purdah from him. The man's instruction therefore complies with the Shari'ah and he has not infringed on his mother's rights.
