Hairs from a Qur'aan

Q: Ilm-36: There has been much discussion about the hairs coming out of Qur?aans. Some people are of the opinion that these are Rasulullaah SAW.'s hairs and they therefore preserve them in perfume, have sessions of Durood taking place and people come to see it. Others say that they are the miracle (Karaamat) of some saint and therefore need to be revered. Please clarify the situation and tell us what is to be done with these hairs.

Answer: There is no place that is without some hairs, either hairs of the head, eyebrows. moustache. beard or countless other parts of the body. Thousands of hairs fall off or are cut off the body on a daily basis and when carried in the air, they are able to settle in thousands of places. Now if hairs are found in the pages of Qur'aans that have been used for years and whose pages are opened for hours on end, there should be no need for surprise. In fact, what would be surprising is if no hairs are found in a Qur'aan.

Regarding these to be Rasulullaah SAW.'s hairs and to have sessions of Durood taking place and people come to see it only corrupts the Imaan. Regarding them to be a Karaamat is also a most foolish supposition.

Remember that every strange act is not necessarily a Karaamat, but can well be an act of Shaytaan called Istidraaj. Hadhrat Sheikh Abdul Qaadir Jaylaani RAH. relates, "I once stayed awhile in a deserted forest. One day, I became extremely thirsty and despite searching for water, I could find none' Just then, a cloud appeared and some raindrops started to fall, which gave me some comfort. However, a light then beamed from the cloud, which illuminated the entire sky. A most remarkable apparition then took shape that addressed me with the message: 'O Abdul Qaadir! I am your Rabb and am making all Haraam things Halaal for you. You may therefore do as you please because you will not be questioned.' I immediately said, Aaudhu Billahi Minsh shaytan Nirrajim. (?I seek Allaah's protection from the accursed Shaytaan'). Accursed Shaytaan! Get away from here! What nonsense are you talking?!' As soon as I recited Audhu Billahi Minsh shaytanirrajim the light turned to darkness, the apparition disappeared and a voice said, 'O Abdul Qaadir! It is because of your knowledge of the Shari'ah, your insight, your Taqwa and the fact that you are a wise and pious scholar that has saved you from me. I have already misled seventy ascetic worshippers and Sufis at this very place.

This teaches us that regarding every extraordinary feat to be a Karaamat is a sure sign of deviation. What will happen when Dajjaal will bring people back to life and will have with him a Jannah and Jahannam, entering his followers into his Jannah and throwing his opponents into his Jahannam? He will provide grain and rain for his followers during droughts and buried treasures will all be at his disposal. How will people with such weak Imaan save themselves at such a time?

Hadhrat Umar radi. had a blessed and historical tree felled even though it is mentioned in the Qur'aan. This he did because people were attaching too much importance to it. Similarly, when people started to do this same with the places in Makkah and Madinah where Rasulullaah SAW. performed salaah, he cautioned them saying, "It was things like this that destroyed the people of the past. They also started following (giving exaggerated importance to) the signs of their Ambiyaa ALY.

The hairs separated from a person's body should be buried and although it is permissible to throw it away, care should be taken that it is not thrown in the toilet or bath because this breeds illnesses.

NOTE: Brothers! The Qur'aan contains the laws of Allaah and is the best code to follow, filled with guidance to lead a person to the best of this world and the Aakhirah. It is regrettable to note that rather than searching for guidance in the Qur'aan, we search rather for hairs and then start to worship them (Allaah forbid!).May Allaah guide us all. Aameen. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
