Should the Du'aa after the Fardh Salaah be Audible or Silent

Q: Ilm-31: Should the du'aa after the Fardh salaah be audible or silent? Please explain according to the principles and citing the names of the references.

Answer: According to the Hanafi, Shaafi'ee, Maaliki and Hambali schools of jurisprudence, it is preferable to make du'aa silently. Sheikh Mansoor bin Idrees RAH. states that this is best because of the verse of the Qur'aan that states: "Supplicate to your Rabb in humility and in a lowered voice." This is preferred because it is closer to sincerity. Raising the voice is disliked both in salaah and out of salaah, except for the person performing Hajj because it is preferable for him to call out the Talbiya loudly.

The Maaliki and Shaafi'ee schools of jurisprudence allow loud du'aa so that others may learn and so that they may say Aameen to the du'aa. However, they stipulate that this is permissible only when it will not disturb people performing salaah. If such people will be disturbed, none of the Imaams of Fiqh allow the audible du'aa. Imaams of Masaajid should ensure that they avoid such Makrooh and impermissible acts so that they are never guilty of any sin. Maintaining a practice that opposes the Sunnah is also a sinful act.

And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
