What Intention must an Imaam Make?

Q: Salaah-29: What intention must an Imaam make when standing up for salaah?

Answer: He should make the following intentions:

1. I am performing salaah solely for Allaah
2. I am performing a Fardh (obligatory) salaah (otherwise a Waajib salaah if it is so)
3. He must also know which salaah he is performing (Fajr, Zuhr, etc) It is not necessary for the Imaam to have the intention of being the Imaam. Therefore, if a person starts to follow another who was performing salaah by himself, both the acts of leading and following will be valid. The Imaam should however make the intention of being the Imaam so that he receives the rewards of being an Imaam. It is however necessary for the follower to make the intention of following. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
