Transating the Khutbah before Delivering it

Q: Salaah-728: Before the Khutbah of the Jumu'ah salaah, the Imaam mounts the pulpit to translate the Khutbah into Urdu. The Adhaan is then called out and the Khutbah delivered in Arabic. Is it not a Bid'ah to do this?

Answer: There is no harm in explaining a few injunctions of Deen (in a lecture) or even translating the Khutbah before the second Adhaan of Jumu'ah is called out. In fact, this is preferred. It is however best for the lecture not to be from the pulpit and for the person delivering the lecture to be someone other than the Khateeb so that the lecture and the Khutbah should not be confused. Five minutes may also be given between the lecture and the second Adhaan so that people who have not yet performed their Sunnah salaah may do so And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
