Sitting and Delivering the Khutbah

Q: Salaah-521: What do the Ulema and Muftis have to say about an Imaam of a Masjid who is also the Khateeb (person who delivers the Khutbah). Because he gets dizzy spells and is a weak person, he cannot stand and deliver the Khutbah. Can he do so sitting down? The people of the town are unable to employ another person as the Khateeb.

Answer: it is Sunnah to stand and deliver the Khutbah. When Hadhrat Ka'b bin Ujrah RAH. saw Abdur Rahmaan bin Ummu Hakam sitting and delivering the Khutbah, he became angry and said, "This wretch is sitting and delivering the Khutbah!

Although it is permissible to sit and deliver the Khutbah when one has an excuse, one will not be allowed to do so always. Some other arrangement will have to be made. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
