Is it Permissible to Make Du?aa to the Ambiyaa alayhissalaam and Auliyaa?

Q: Imaan-10 : Is it permissible to make du'aa to the Ambiyaa alayhissalaam or the Auliyaa to request them to do something for one, such as grant one children, get one a job or make one win a court case?

Answer: It is not permissible to make such du'aas to the creation. Du'aa is a form of Ibaadah (worship) and Ibaadah is reserved exclusively for Allaah. It is Haraam to direct lbaadah at the creation. Qaadhi Thanaa'ullaah paanipati RAH. states that it is Haraam to prostrate before the graves of the Ambiyaa alayhissalaam and Auliyaa, to make Tawaaf around their graves, to make du'aa to them and to take vows in their names.

Irshaadut Taalibeen (Pg.28) states that it is not permissible to make du'aa to either living or deceased Auliyaa or to the Ambiyaa alayhissalaam. Because Rasulullaah (S.A.W.) said that du'aa is an act of Ibaadah.
Hadhrat Shah Wali'ullaah Muhaddith Dehlawi RAH. writes: ?The person who goes to the tomb of Hadhrat Khwaja Ajmeri RAH. in Ajmer shareef or to the tomb of Sayyid Salaar Mas'ood or to that of any other saint to ask for any need, then such a person is guilty of a grave sin. This is a sin worse than murder and adultery. If an example may be cited, it is like that Mushrik who worships an idol that he had made and like asking one's needs from Laat and Uzza (two idols that the Mushrikeen of Makkah used to worship)."

It is stated in Majaalisul Abraar that asking one's needs from deceased people is exactly how the Mushrikeen ask from their idols. Whether the request is for assistance, sustenance, health, children, settling debts, relief from calamities or anything else. All the Imaams are unanimous that no such action is permissible.

The crux of it all is that asking for needs such as children, cure or sustenance from anyone other than Allaah is an act of the Mushrikeen.

Muhaddith Allaama Taahir RAH. says that none of the Ulema of Islaam condone the act of visiting the tombs of the Auliyaa to perform salaah there and to make du'aa to them to ask for one's needs. This is because worship, asking for needs and assistance are exclusively reserved for Allaah.

Think awhile Each duy, Allaah ta?aala requires His servants to admit several Times.

(Iyya kana?a budu wa iyya kanast?een).

?Only You do we worship and only from You do we ask for help"

Furthermore, Rasulullaah (S.A.W.) was giving advice to Hadhrat Abdullaah binAbbaas RADI. when he said. "Whenever you make du'aa, make du'aa to Allaah and whenever you ask for assistance, ask from Allaah."

At the time of death. Sheikh Abdul Qaadir Jaylaani RAH. gave the following advice to his son Abdul Wahhaab: "Ensure that you adhere to Taqwa and obedience to Allaah. Neither fear nor entertain hopes in anyone other than Allaah. Hand over all your needs to Allaah (ta?aala) and ask only Him to fulfil them. Never have trust nor pin your reliance in anyone other than Allaah because He is free from all faults. Remember Towheed, Towheed, Towheed."
Believe only in One Allaah, trust only in One Allaah and pin your hopes only In one Allaah. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
