Proof for the Impermissibility of Making the Ta'ziya

Q: Imaan-62 : What is the proof for the impermissibility of making the Ta'ziya?

Answer: The reasons for Ta'ziya being impermissible and in conflict with the Shari'ah are more apparent than the sun and even a Muslim with the least insight can understand them.

The Qur'aan states, "Do you worship what you carve?" The Ta'ziya is carved by hand from bamboo and people then take oaths in its name and ask their needs from it. People bring their children to it to make du'aa for their health prostrate before it and consider visiting it equal to visiting Hadhrat Husayn RADI. Does all of this not grind against the very grain of Imaan and the teachings of Islaam?

Allaam Hayaat Sindhi Madani RAH. (passed away 1163 A.H.) wrote that amongst the evils that the Rawaafidh indulge in is that they make a statue of the tomb of Hadhrat Husayn RADI. decorate it and then take it through the streets and alleys, calling out,'Yaa Husayn! Yaa Husayn!'and carrying out acts of wasteful extravagance. These are all acts of Bid'ah and are not permissible.

In fact, even Molvi Ahmad Ridha Khan wrote the following Fataawaa:

1. He stated that regarding the Ta'ziyo to be something that fulfils one's needs is foolish, taking oaths in its name is an act of gross ignorance as is thinking that not doing so will cause harm to one.
2.It is Haraam to mourn during the moth of Muharram.
3.One should turn away and ignore the Ta'ziya as it comes by and not even look at it?
4.It is not permissible to participate in the mourning that takes place during Muharram"'
5.This disliked act is referred to as Ta'ziyadaari and is totally Haraam"

Molvi Mustafa Ridha Khaani Berelwi also wrote that the Ta'ziya is an act of Bid'ah and can never be from amongst the acts of Islaam. It is strongly cautioned against because it is a waste of money. Molvi Muhammad Irfaan Radhwi writes that it is Haraam to make the Ta'ziya and also to sprinkleflowers over it.
