To Give Rice and Coconut to the Imaam on the Occasion of s Wedding

Q: Imaan-111 : It is a custom here for the bride's party to place 5 and three quarter Ser of rice and a coconut in front of the groom's party and to then take five Rupees from the groom. After the Imaam Sahib conducts the Nikaah, the rice and coconut is given to him and he takes the five Rupees as payment for conducting the Nikaah. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in this regard?

Answer: This is a Hindu custom and carrying it out will corrupt one's beliefs. It is therefore necessary to forsake the practice, to repent and to rectify one's beliefs. Failing to do this will render one sinful. The responsibility of paying the person who conducts the Nikaah falls to the one who has appointed him to do so and it is proper for him to accept the payment. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
