Sleeping with the Leg on the Opposite Knee

Q: Ilm-28: A Molvi Sahib tells us that according to a Hadith of Tirmidhi, it is forbidden to sleep with one leg on top of the knee of the other leg. A person will therefore be sinful for doing so. Is this correct?

Answer: Prohibition for doing this has undoubtedly been reported. However, the reason for this prohibition was that people usually wore lungis (loose loincloths) during the time of Rasulullaah SAW. and sleeping in this manner would cause the private areas of the body (Satr) to be exposed.

However, if a person wears a trouser or is cautious about tying his lungi well to prevent exposure, there will be no harm in sleeping in this manner. In fact, the Sahabah RADI. were seen sleeping with one leg upon the other. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
