Will a Pond be 'Ten by Ten' when it is five hands wide and twenty hands long?

Q: Taharaat-14; The pond here at our Masjid measures ten by ten but our Committee wishes to either reduce the length and increase the width or vice versa. Is there any problem with this or not?

Answer: It is not necessary for the length and width of the pond to be equal. Just as 10x10 will suffice, so too will 20x5, 25x4 and 50x2. lf the pond is circular, the circumference must measure at least 36 yards or to be safe, 48 yards. If it is triangular, each side must measure at least 15.5 yards. As for the depth, it need be only that much that after taking a handful of water the surface below does not expose.
