Reciting Durood during the Khutbah

Q: Salaah-154.: Should people recite Durood during the Khutbah when the Imaam recites the verse:
INNAL LAAHAA WAMALAA IKTAHU YUSALLUN ALNNABI YA AYYUHALL LADHIN-AAMANU SALLU ALAYHI WA?SALLAMU TASLEEMA.

Answer: The best course of action to follow is to remain silent and to recite the Durood in one's mind without moving the tongue. None of the Fuqahaa say that it is permissible to recite the Durood loudly in this case. Kabeen (pg.250) states that according to Imaam Abu Haneefah RAH. and Imaam Muhammad SAW. when the Imaam recites the verse in the Khutbah, the Musallis should remain silent. Imaam Abu Yusuf RAH. is of the opinion that Durood be recited in the heart. Although some Ulema prefer this opinion, the majority of them state that a person should remain completely silent. This is stated in Kitaabul Hujjah as well.

Durrul Mukhtaar and Shaami (Vol.1 Pg.768) both state that it is best to recite the Durood in one's mind and make it clear that it must not be recite audibly. In fact, there is no difference of opinion in this ruling even between the Ulema of the Deobandi school and those of the Barelwi school. Bihaare Shari'ah (Vol. Pg.100) states: "When the person delivering the Khutbah takes the name of Rasulullaah SAW. those present should recite Durood in their hearts because reciting it loudly is not permissible." And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
