Making Du'as during Sajdah

Q: Salaah-138: Is it correct to make du'aa while in Sajdah? After performing the Tahajjud salaah or other daily salaahs, is it permissible to then make Sajdah and make du'aa for forgiveness and for one s needs while in Sajdah? While some people say that it is Makrooh, others say that it is permissible. Did Rasulullaah SAW. make du'aa while in Sajdah?

Answer: Such a Sajdah is referred to as Sajdah Munaajaat and some Ulema have stated that it is Makrooh. It is therefore wrong to make a habit of this disputed method of du'aa while forsaking something about all are unanimous that it was done by Rasulullaah SAW. Sharhu Safris Sa'aadah (Pg.159) states that the narrations reporting this type of prolonged Sajdah refers to the Sajdah that Rasulullaah SAW. made while performing Nafl salaah. One may therefore recite the du'aas reported in the Ahadeeth during the Sajdah of Tahajjud.
