Calling out the Second Adhaan of Jumu'ah in front of the Khateeb

Q: Salaah-606: Some people here are of the opinion that the second Adhaan of the Jumu'ah salaah should be called out outside the Masjid and not inside. What is the ruling?

Answer: The practice of calling out the second Adhaan of the Jumu'ah salaah is an age-old practice and the words describing it in the books of jurisprudence make it apparent that it be called out in front of the pulpit or close by.

Hidaayah states: "When the Imaam mounts the pulpit and sits down, the Mu'adhin will call out the Adhaan in front of the pulpit. This practice has been passed down from generation to generation. It is therefore established that the second Adhaan of the Jumu'ah salaah has always been called out inside the Masjid. as a practice passed down from generation to generation. Something being passed down from generation to generation is an extremely strong proof in Islaamic jurisprudence and the Fuqahaa even use this as a basis to prove certain injunctions of Deen. An example of this is the mention of the Khulafaa Raashideen and the uncles of Rasulullaah SAW. in the second Khutbah of the Jumu'ah salaah.

Hadhrat Shah Wali'ullaah Muhaddith Dehlawi RAH. says about acts that have been passed on from generation to generation that they are an extremely great source for deriving law.

It must be borne in mind that extracts like the above from Hidaayah appear in several books of jurisprudence. Amongst these are Maraaqil Falaah (pg.28O) , Bahrur Raa'iq (Vol.1 Pg. 157), Majma'ul Anhar (Vol.1 Pg. 171), Fataawaa Aalamgeeri (Vol.1 Pg. 149). Durrul Mukhtaar with Shaami (Vol.1 Pg.770) Ghaayatul Awtaar (Vol. 1 Pg.380) and Majaalisul Abraar (Pg.296).

In his commentary of Hidaayah. Allaama Ayni RAH. reports from Hadhrat Hasan bin Ziyaad RAH. that the Adhaan after which it is necessary for people to hasten to salaah is the Adhaan that is called out from the Minaarah and not the one called out in front of the pulpit because if were this (second) Adhaan, people would miss the Sunnah salaah as well as the Khutbah, especially when the city is big.

Maraaqil Falaah (Pg.282) states that it is when the first Adhaan is called out that trade needs to be stopped. This is because if one has to wait for the Adhaan that is called out in front of the pulpit, there is great fear of missing the salaah in Jamaa'ah altogether.

Both the above extracts make it apparent that the second Adhaan is one that is called out close to the pulpit. Had it been Makrooh to call out the Adhaan inside the Masjid, the Fuqahaa would have certainly made this clear and not merely stated that the Adhaan is one that is called out "in front of the pulpit", "in front of the Khateeb" or "close to the pulpit".

In fact, the second Adhaan really is one that ought to be called out inside the Masjid like the lqaamah because its purpose is to harness the attention of those inside the Masjid, informing them that the Khutbah is about to begin. People engaged in various other activities such as Dhikr, recitation of the Qur'aan, etc. may then stop what they are doing and pay attention to the Khutbah. Calling out the Iqaamah inside the Masjid is not Makrooh according to all scholars.

The comparison we have drawn between the second Adhaan and the lqaamah is substantiated from texts in Maraaqil Falaah (Pg.280) and Si'aayah (Vol.2 Pg.38). It may be noted also that the Khutbah of the Jumu'ah salaah is very much like salaah itself and has been compared as such by the Fuqahaa. It is for this reason that everything forbidden during salaah has been forbidden during the Khutbah as well, such as speaking, eating, etc. Similarly, everything that is Makrooh during salaah has been made Makrooh during the Khrrtbah as well, such as looking around , etc. This further lends to the similarity between this second Adhaan and the Iqaamah.

A brief reply to this question has been give in a previous Fatwa of Fataawaa Raheemiyyah and it will be useful to refer to it as well.

And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
