Duration of the Du'aa after Salaah

Q: Salaah-661: Our Imaam here makes a long du'aa after the Fajr and Asr salaahs, but only a few du'aa after the Zuhr, Maghrib and Isha salaahs. He also makes a long du'aa after the Eid salaah. What is the Sunnah practice?

Answer: A slightly longer du'aa may be made after the Fajr and Asr salaahs (after which there are no Sunnah or Nawaafil salaahs). However, in the interests of the weak, the ill and those who have work to do, the du'aa should not be too long. However, in the Zuhr. Maghrib and Isha salaahs (after which there are Sunnah or Nawaafil salaahs to be performed), a short du'aa should be made. It is best to add du'aas reported in the Ahadeeth after first reciting:

(ALLHUMMA ANTS SALAAMU WA?MINKAS SALAAMU TABAARAKT-? YAA JAL JALAALI WAL IKRAAM)

Because there are Sunnah or Nawaafil salaahs to be performed after the Jumu'ah salaah, the du'aa after the Jumu'ah salaah ought to be brief. Similarly, Because there is the Khutbah after the Eid salaah, the du'aa after the Eid salaah also ought to be brief. However. it is Masnoon for the Khutbah to follow immediately after the salaah and making a du'aa will cause this to be lost. The du'aa given importance on the occasion of Eid is the du'aa made during the Khutbah. We have not been commanded to make du'aa after the Eid salaah, nor is there any substantiation for making the du'aa after the Khutbah.
