Performing the Sajdah Tilaawaah without Reciting the verse and not Performing it at all

Q: Salaah-722: (1) An Imaam of the Taraaweeh salaah recited Surah Alaq and performed the Sajdah Tilaawah without reciting the verse of Sajdah. He then completed the salaah as normal. Is the salaah valid and will it be counted as Taraaweeh?

(2) In another two Rakaahs, he recited the Sajdah Tilaawah verse but did not perform the Sajdah Tilaawah. What is the ruling?

Answer: (1) There is no need for a Sajdah Tilaawah when the verse of Sajdah Tilaawah was not recited. The Sajdah Tilaawah that the Imaam made was therefore unnecessary. The salaah will however still be valid and will be included in the Taraaweeh salaah.

(2) Sajdah 'Tilaawah was however Waajib (compulsory) in the second case and needed to be performed within the same salaah. If it was not performed in the salaah, it will be waived and there is no Qadhaa for it. A person will however be guilty of a grave sin if it was intentionally omitted.

If the Imaam did not recite more than two or three verses after the Sajdah Tilaawah verse and then went into Ruku, the Sajdah Tilaawah will be considered done if both him and the Muqtadis made the intention of Sajdah Tilaawah with the Ruku. However, if the Imaam does not make the intention, the Ruku will automatically suffice as Sajdah Tilaawah. This will however not be the case if the Imaam recited more then three verses after the Sajdah Tilaawah verse. In this case, one will have to seek Allaah's forgiveness. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
