Should the Two Shahaadahs and Hay'alaahs be recited Once or Twice in the Iqaamah?

Q: Salaah-326: There are many people from India and Pakistan working here in Dubai and we have established a place for salaah. The Iqaamah is delivered as we do at home with the two Shahaadahs (Ash Hadu Allaah ilaaha illallaah' and 'Ash Hadu Anna Muhammadar Rasulullaah') being called out twice and the Hay'alaahs ('Hayya Alas Salaah' and 'Hayya Alal Falaah' ) also called out twice The Arabs however object and say that each of these should be called out once only. Please explain.

Answer: The Ulema differ on the aspect of whether the two Shahaadahs and Hay'alaahs should be called out once or twice. According to Imaam Abu haneefah RAH. Imaam Sufyaan Thowri RAH., Imaam Ibn Mubaarak RAH. and the Ulema of Kufa, they are to be called out twice. There are several Ahadeeth to support this view, but we will suffice with just a few. Refer to the books of Ahadeeth for others.

The first proof: The strongest of their proofs is the narration that gives an account of the dream that Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zaid bin Abdi Rabbini RADI. had in which an angel told him the words of the Adhaan. He then recounted the dream to Rasulullaah SAW. who then instructed Hadhrat Bilaal RADI. to call out the Adhaan in this manner, This narration is found in the Musannaf of Imaam Ibn Abi Shaybah RAH. whose real name was Abu Bakr. To realise his ranking amongst the scholars of Ahadeeth, it suffices to state that he taught Imaam Bukhaari RAH. Imaam Muslim RAH. Imaam Abu Dawood RAH. and Imaam Ibn Maajah RAH. He passed away in 235 A.H. and the narration is reported with an authentic chain of narrators from Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Abi Layla RAH.

In this narration. Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Abi Layla RAH. says, "The companions of Muhammad #s narrated to us that Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zard Ansaari RADI. once came to Rasulullaah SAW. to report that (in a dream) he had seen a man in two green garments standing on a wall and calling out the words of the Adhaan twice each and the words of the Iqaamah twice each. He then sat down. Hearing this, Hadhrat BilaaI RADI. stood up and also called out the words of the Adhaan twice each and the words of the lqaamah twice each before sitting down.

With regard to the chain of narrators of this Hadith, Allaama Ibn Daqeequl Eid RAH. says, "The narrators are all authentic and the narration is Muttasil according to the consensus of the scholars that all the Sahabah RADI. are perfectly reliable. Not knowing their names therefore presents no obstacle. Allaama Ibn Hazm RAH. abo states that the chain of narrators is perfectly authentic.

Another narration by Hadhrat Abu Umays RAH. states that when Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zaid Ansaari RADI. saw the Adhaan being called out twice in his dream and the Iqaamah also twice. Haafidh RAH. has verified that the chain of narrators is perfectly authentic.

Yet another narration from Imaam Tahaawi RAH. states that when Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zaid RADI. reported the dream to Rasulullaah SAW. Rasulullaah SAW. told him to teach the words to Hadhrat Bilaal RADI. who then called out the Adhaan. This narration also specifies that the words of the Adhaan and the Iqaamah were called out twice. Imaam Tahaawi RAH. then states that this narration proves that Hadhrat Bilaal RADI. was taught to call out the Adhaan by Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zaid RADI. and therefore called out both the two Shahaadahs and Hay'alaahs twice.

The second proof: A narration from Abdur Razzaaq RAH. states that when Hadhrat Imaam Thowri RAH. called out the Adhaan and Iqaamah in Mina, he called out all the words twice.

The third proof: Another narration from Abdur Razzaaq RAH. states that Hadhrat Bilaal RADI. called out the words of the Adhaan and Iqaamah twice.

The fourth proof: Yet another narration from Hadhrat Aswad? quotes from Hadhrat Bilaal RADI. that he twice repeated the words of the Adhaan and the lqaamah.

The fifth proof: A narration from Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zaid RADI. states that the Adhaan and lqaamah of Rasulullaah SAW. consisted of words repeated twice.

The sixth proof: Yet another narration from Hadhrat Aswad RAH. quotes from Hadhrat Bilaal RADI. that he twice repeated the words of the Adhaan and the lqaamah.

The seventh proof: Hadhrat Abdul Azeez bin Rufay RAH. states that he heard Hadhrat Abu Mahdhoorah RADI. calling out the words of the Adhaan and the Iqaamah twice.

The eighth proof: Hadhrat Abu Mahdhoorah RADI. said that Rasulullaah SAW. taught him to call out the lqaamah as seventeen phrases (which is possible only when the Shahaadahs and Hay'alaahs are called out twice).

The ninth proof: Hadhrat Ibraheem RAH. states that he heard Hadhrat Thowbaan RAH. called out the words of the Adhaan and the Iqaamah twice.
All the above proves that calling out the Shahaadahs and Hay'alaahs twice as the Hanafis do is substantiated by the Ahadeeth. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
