How to Complete Missed Rakaahs

Q: Salaah-375: When a person missed three of a four Rakaah salaah behind the Imaam, how must he complete these missed Rakaahs? In which Rakaahs must he recite a Surah with Surah Faatiha and after which Rakaah must he sit for Qa'dah? Please explain with references.

Answer: In this case, the Masbooq must stand up after the Imaam makes Salaam and recite the Thanaa, Ta'awwudh, Tasmiya, Surah Faatiha and a Surah. Thereafter, he will go into Ruku, perform the two Sajdahs and then sit for the Qa'dah. After standing up from the Qa'dah, he will recite Surah Faatiha and a Surah in the second Rakaah. However, after this Rakaah, he will not sit in Qa'dah but get up for the third Rakaah immediately after the Sajdahs. Now in the third Rakaah, he will recite only Surah Faatiha and no Surah. Thereafter, the salaah will be ended as usual with the final Qa'dah. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
