When the Jamaa'ah Starts as One is Performing the Sunnah salaah

Q: Salaah-358: A person started his four Rakaahs Sunnah salaah of Zuhr, but then the Jamaa'ah stood up for the Fardh salaah. He then terminated the salaah by making Salaam after two Rakaahs. Can he suffice by performing two Rakaahs afterwards or does he need to complete four Rakaahs? Furthermore, it is best to complete the four Rakaahs or make Salaam after two Rakaahs?

Answer: In the stated case, he will have to perform four Rakaahs salaah because these four Rakaahs are Sunnah with one Salaam. It was not necessary to end the salaah after two Rakaahs and it would have been best to complete all four Rakaahs. However, ending after two Rakaahs is also correct.

Hadhrat Mufti Kifaayatullaah RAH. writes with regard to the Sunnah Rakaahs of Zuhr: "If one is performing the four Rakaahs Sunnah and the Zuhr salaah starts, one should complete the four Rakaahs before joining the Jamaa'ah. If one completed the salaah after two Rakaahs and then performed four Rakaahs after the Fardh salaah, it will also be permissible. The first option is however the better one. The same in stated in Behisti Thamar (Vol.1 Pg.134). And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
