Garlanding Huffaadh after Completion of the Qur'aan

Q: Salaah-483: As a token of honour to the Huffaadh, they are garlanded on the night they complete the Qur'aan in the Taraaweeh salaah. Is this correct and is there substantiation from any books? I am a Haafidh and will be sitting for I'tikaaf and do not want my I'tikaaf to be nullified by this garlanding. Am I allowed to lie to avoid having this done?

Answer: This custom is wrong and should be forsaken. It is also a wasteful exercise. If people which to honour the Haafidh, why do they not drape an Arab shawl or something else over the Haafidh? You however have no permission to lie to avoid the garlanding. You should explain to them that you do not like the custom and that it is conflicts with the Shari'ah. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
