Are all Salaahs the Same in Terms of Performing Sajdah Sahw?

Q: Salaah-514: Instead of sitting in Qa'dah after two Rakaahs of the Taraaweeh salaah, the Imaam started to stand up but then sat down when the followers corrected him. He then sat down and completed the salaah without performing Sajdah Sahw. When asked about it, he replied that since the Taraaweeh salaah is a Sunnah salaah. it will not be necessary to perform the Sajdah Sahw for any error that necessitates it. Does this mean that if the Sajdah Sahw was not made, it will not be necessary to repeat the salaah?

Answer: What the imaam said is incorrect. The ruling with regards to Sajdah Sahw. is the same regardless of whether the salaah is a Fardh. Waajib, Sunnah or Nafl salaah. The exception is in the Eid and Jumu'ah salaahs when the crowd is large. During these salaahs, the Sajdah Sahw will be waived only because of the risk of the confusion it may create, which may ultimately result in the entire salaah being nullified. If such a situation of confusion may arise from a Taraaweeh salaah that is attended by a very large crowd, the Sajdah Sahw will also be waived and it will not be necessary to repeat the salaah. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
