Can a Salaah Repeated after a Few days be Performed in Congregation? Will the Reward of Salaah in Congregation be Attained?

Q: Salaah-24: A few people performed their Fajr salaah behind the Imaam and it was only after a few days that the Imaam announced that the Fajr salaah of that day had to be repeated because he had been impure that day because of some valid reason. Should this salaah be repeated in congregation or individually? If the salaah is performed individually, will those who performed the salaah in congregation the first time receive the reward of salaah in congregation?

Answer: If the Imaam realised the problem at the same time, the salaah may have been performed in congregation the same time without repeating the Adhaan and Iqaamah after the Imaam had purified himself. A Hadith of Bukhaari states that Rasulullaah SAW. once came out of his room to lead the salaah and before starting, he realised that he needed to bath (a narration of Abu Dawood states that he had already started the salaah). He then told the Sahabah RADI. to remain standing as they were and then proceeded to Take the bath. Thereafter, he returned, called out the Takbeer Tahreemah and led the salaah.

However, when all the Musallis have left, it will not be necessary to gather them together to perform the salaah in congregation. Every person must then repeat the salaah as soon as he hears the news, provided it is not the Makrooh time for salaah. It happened during the Khilaafah of Hadhrat Ali RADI. that he also realised he had needed a bath after he had already led the salaah. He then duly informed the Musallis to repeat their salaah.

Fataawaa Aalamgeeri (Vol.1 Pg.55) states that if a group of people realise after their salaah in congregation that it was invalid, they should repeat the salaah in the same place and in congregation if it was during the time of the same salaah. This should be done without repeating the Adhaan and Iqaamah. However, if they realised this after the time had expired, they should repeat the salaah also without Adhaan and lqaamah but in another place.

According to the Ahadeeth, the Musallis will not be deprived of the reward for salaah in congregation. A Hadith states that if a person performs wudhu well and then proceeds to the Masjid for salaah, he will receive the reward of salaah in congregation even if the salaah is over by the rime he reaches Nurul Idhaa (Pg.82) also states the reward of salaah in congregation will be attained if it is missed for a valid reason.
