The Method of Conferring Isaale Thawaab

Q: Janaa'iz-80: What should be recited to confer Isaale Thawaab to the deceased when attending the graveyard or the home of the deceased? In other words, how must the Faatiha be carried out?

Answer: One may complete a recitation of the Qur'aan or recite any part of the Qur'aan one is able to, such as Surah Faatiha' Surah Ikhlaas Surah yaaseen, Surah Mulk, Surah Takaathur or any other portion of the Qur'aan, one should then make the intention that the rewards of this deed be conferred to the deceased. Similarly, one may also recite Durood, perform Nafl salaah, give Sadaqah or pay Fidyah according to one's means and then make the intention that the rewards of this deed be conferred to the deceased.

Shaami (Vol.1 Pg.844) states that one may recite whatever portion of the Qur'aan one is able to recite, such as Surah Faatiha, the opening verses of surah Baqara, Aayatul Kursi, the closing verses of surah Baqara' surah yaaseen, surah Mulk, surah Takaathur or surah Ikhraas either twelve, eleven, seven or three times. one may then say' "o Allaah! Bestow the rewards of what I have recited to him/her/them."

Imaam Nawawi RAH. states that it is Mustahab for a person visiting the graveyard to recite any portion of the Qur'aan that he is able to and to then confer the rewards to the people in the graves.

Fataawaa Aalamgeeri (Vol.5 Pg.394) states that one visiting the graveyard should recite surah Faatiha, Aayatul Kursi, surah zIlzaal and surah Takaathur when entering the graveyard.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah RADI. reports from Rasulullaah SAW. that upon entering the graveyard, a person should recite surah Faatiha. surah Ikhlaas and surah Takaathur and then say, "O Allaah! I confer the rewards of Your speech that I have recited to all the believing men and women of this graveyard." when he does this, they will all intercede on his behalf before Allaah.

Another narration of Daar Qutni states that Rasulullaah SAW. said, "when a person passes by a graveyard, recites surah Ikhlaas eleven times and bestow the rewards to the deceased, his rewards will be multiplied by the number of people buried there.

Sheikhul Islaam Hadhrat Moulana Husayn Ahmad Madani RAH. says that the following du'aa should be recited when visiting graves:

Du?aa Fatawa Rahimiyyah (vol. 3 pg. 79)

Thereafter, one should recite Durood three times, Surah Faatiha three times, Surah Ikhlaas twelve times, Durood another three times and then confer the rewards to the people of the graves.

And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
