Spraying Water on the Grave after Burial to Prevent the Sand from Dispersing

Q: Janaa'iz-99: What is the ruling concerning spraying water over the grave after burial? Has this any substantiation? There are many people who spray water over graves every Thursday or Friday. What is the ruling?

Answer: It is permissible to spray water on the grave so that the sand remains compacted, thereby preserving the semblance of a grave. In fact, this is preferable and even established from the Ahadeeth. The water should be sprayed from the side of the head and then completed at the feet. If the soil does disperse afterwards, there will be no harm in spraying water over the grave again. There is however no substantiation for giving importance to Thursdays and Fridays for carrying this out. A Hadith states that Rasulullaah SAW. cast three handfuls of sand into the grave and sprinkled water over the grave of his son Hadhrat Ibraheem RADI.

Hadhrat Jaabir RADI. reports that Hadhrat Bilaal bin Rabaah RADI. poured water from a waterbag over the grave of Rasulullaah SAW. starting from the side of the head and then completing at the feet. Another Hadith states that Rasululraah SAW. sprinkled water over the grave of Hadhrat sa'd RADI.

Durrul Mukhtaar states that it is Mustahab to sprinkle water over graves to prevent the sand from being blown away because Rasulullaah SAW. did so on the graves of Hadhrat Ibraheem RADI. and Hadhrat sa'd RADI. These Abu Dawood are reported in Ibn Maajah and the Maraaseel of Abu Dawood. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
