Leaving the Masjid to Attend a Court Hearing

Q: It'kaaf-19: A person sitting in I'tikaaf needed to present himself in court on a date that fell during the last ten days of Ramadhaan. His attendance is vital. Can he leave the Masjid for this purpose?

Answer: His Sunnah Mu'akkadah I'tikaaf will be nullified by presenting himself in court, but if he had no option, he will not be sinful. However, in such an urgent situation, we will practise on the opinion of Imaam Abu Yusuf RAH. and Imaam Muhammad RAH. which states that the I'tikaaf will still be valid if he stayed out of the Masjid for less than a day.
