Hilaal [Sighting of the New Moon] - General

Repeating a Fast

Q: Hil-1:Here in Lucknow and Bombay, we received news of the sighting of the moon by radio. However, the Imaam of the Jaami Masjid of Delhi announced that the moon was not sighted even though the horizon was clear and though there were very little clouds about. Should we accept the opinion of the radio or of the Imaam?

Answer: In the stated case, it was best for you to act upon what your Imaam said rather than follow the news on the radio. The moon was not sighted in several places, including Delhi and Sahaaranpur. The first fast was therefore on Thursday after counting thirty days for the month. However, since it was established that the moon was sighted on the 29th it will be necessary to observe a Qadhaa fast after Ramadhaan. There is however no Qadhaa for the Taraaweeh salaah.
