Using Bricks from an Old Masjid onto a Public Road

Q: Masaajid and Madaaris-4 : An old Masjid has been demolished. Can the bricks be used for a public road that is used by everyone or must it be sold and the funds then be used for the expenses of the Masjid?

Answer: The bricks from an old Masjid needs to be respected. Using it for a public road is disrespectful and contrary to good etiquette. The bricks should therefore be used in an appropriate place where no disrespect will be shown or sold to a person who will not show disrespect to them. The funds may then be used for the Masjid. Durrul Mukhtaar with Shaami (Vol.1. Pg.165) states that just as shavings from a pen deserve respect and may not be thrown in a place where disrespect will be shown to it, so too must care be taken with the dirt swept from Masjid and the vegetation removed from it. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
