Three Divorces in one Sitting

Question: I have read in a book titled "The Muslim Husband" that it is Haraam according to the Hanafi Madh'hab to issue three divorces in one sitting

Answer: Yes, issuing three divorces in one sitting is regarded as Haraam and an act of Bid'ah according to the Hanafi Madh'hab. A Hadith states that when Rasulullaah SAW. was informed of a man who issued three divorces in one sitting. Rasulullaah SAW. stood up in anger and exclaimed, He is playing with the Book of Allaah while I am still in your midst!" (The matter was so serious that) Another Sahabi RADI. then stood up and said. "should I then not execute him. O Rasulullaah SAW.

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar RADI. once asked, "O Rasulullaah SAW. What if I divorce my wife thrice?" Rasulullaah SAW.'s reply was, "You would have then disobeyed your Rabb and your wife would have received a Baa'in divorce.

The above Ahadeeth make it clear that such a divorce entails mocking the laws of the Qur'aan, disobedience to Allaah and causes the displeasure of Allaah and His Rasool SAW.. However, despite it being a grave sin, the divorce is effective.

Imaam Maalik RAH. also says that issuing three divorces at once is permissible. According to Imaam Shaafi'ee RAH. it is permissible, better not done. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
