Engaging in Trade while Performing Hajj

Q: Hajj -24: Can a person performing Hajj engage in business while travelling and when he reaches Makkah?

Answer: There is a famous Hadith stating that all deeds are judged by their intentions. Trade should therefore not be the primary objective of the journey, with the Hajj being done by the way. Although the obligation of Hajj will be discharged in this case, such a person will be foolish to expect any rewards for the Hajj. When the objective is both trade and Hajj, the rewards will be less. However, one will not be deprived of any rewards if one goes to perform Hajj as one's primary objective, but also takes along some goods so as to sell them if the occasion arises. Similar will be the case when one coincidentally happens to engage in any business dealings en-route or in Makkah. from which one earns a profit.

A verse of the Qur'aan states: There shall be no sin upon you (no decrease in reward/ should you seek the bounty (your livelihood) from your Rabb.
