Making a Collection for Someone to Perform a Nafl Hajj

Q: Hajj-31: some people in our village are going for Hajj. some of them wish to take a Madrassah teacher along with them. Since he has no money to pay for the Hajj, it is not Fardh for him, yet they are collecting money from others to sponsor him. The money is being collected from other people also going for Hajj. However, some of them are donating money only to save face, even though they are not really happy to do so. Others donated as a gift, but with the condition that the money be used for Hajj only. Is such a donation permissible and will the donors be rewarded?

Answer: It is not permissible to collect money from people to perform a Nafl Hajj However, if an individual or a few persons under take to bear the expense of such a Hajj, there will be no harm in them doing so and they will be rewarded according to their intentions. It is not incumbent on them to accept donations. However, it will be compulsory to perform the Hajj once the monies are received.

If the teacher in question compelled the people to collect or to donate, the monies will have to be returned to the donors. If they all donated from the goodness of their hearts without him prompting the collection. It will be permissible for him tci accept their donations. Such collections are however improper and should be stopped. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
