"You may go Wherever You Please"

Question: My friend wrote a letter to his wife stating, "You may go wherever you please. You are now like my sister. You are separated from me and may do as you please. I divorce you! I divorce you! I divorce you!" He wrote this under the state of intoxication and now regrets what he did. Can he take her back?

Answer: A divorce issued under intoxication is effective. Three divorces are therefore in effect and he will not be able to remarry her until after Halaalah has taken place according to the Shari'ah. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
