A Woman who enters in to a Marriage by Herself

Question: I am in love with a woman who will marry none but myself. My father has approached her father with a proposal, but he refuses to accept. She has since told me that we should go somewhere out of town to get married. Will such a marriage be valid in the light of the Qur'aan and Ahadeeth?

Answer: This marriage will be valid if you and the girl are suitably matched since she is sane and of age. The permission of the guardian is therefore not pivotal. All that needs to be done is for the proposal and acceptance to be witnesses by at least two men or one man and two women, all of whom are Muslim who are sane and mature. The Sunnah method requires that the marriage be made public.
