Marriage of a Dumb Person

Question: We have made arrangements for a 25 year dumb person to get married. How will the marriage ceremony be made?

Answer: If the boy is sane and of age, his marriage will be valid if he agrees to it. If he is able to read and write, a note may be handed to him, asking will whether he agrees to marry the woman (clearly stating her name). The marriage will then be made when he writes that he accepts her as his wife. If he cannot read and write, the marriage may be done by signs, as long as the witnesses clearly understand by the signs that he accepts the woman as his Contrary to what many people think, it is not a fundamental component of the marriage ceremony that the groom recites the Kalimah, Imaan Mujmal and Imaan Mufassal.
