What Type of Person should a Mu'adhin be?

Q: Salaah-3: Is there anything wrong in having a Mu'adhin who is ignorant, who shaves his beard and is an open sinner (Faasiq)?

Answer: Fataawaa Aalamgeeri (Vol.1 Pg.53) states that a Mu'adhin should Be a person who is sane, pious, righteous and one who is knowledgeable of the Sunnah. It states further that the Adhaan of a Faasiq is Makrooh. Therefore, a person who is ignorant, who shaves his beard and is an open sinner should not be made the Mu'adhin.

Because matters like salaah and fasting hinge on the Adhaan, the Mu'adhin should be a person who knows the times of salaah. Furthermore, because the Adhaan is usually called out from a high place, the Mu'adhin usually sees women in their homes and yards without their veils on. For this reason, he ought to be a righteous and religious person.
