Rasulullaah SAW. said, "Those who are righteous and good from amongst you ought to call out the Adhaan.

Q: Salaah-4: (1) What type of person should a Mu'adhin be?

(2) There is Mu'adhin of a Masjid who has been serving for many years. However, he has many bad habits that are against the Shari'ah. He gambles, he makes liquor and he attends the cinemas.' Can such a person be employed as the Mu'adhin? What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in this regard?

(3) Despite being aware of the above, the trustees of the Masjid do not release the Mu'adhin. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in this case?

Answer: (1) The Mu'adhin should be a person who is literate, who knows The ruling pertaining to salaah and Adhaan, who has a loud voice and who is pious and righteous.
(2) Because of the traits you have described, the Mu'adhin is a Faasiq and the Adhaan of a Faasiq is Makrooh.
(3) If the Mu'adhin repents sincerely and assures the people performing salaah there that he has forsaken his bad habits, he may be kept on. Otherwise, it will be necessary for the trustees to dismiss him. They will be sinful if they do not. And Allaah knows best what is most correct.
